The term friend is used very loosely. Most friends would understand their buddy’s pursuit of a girl and how hard it can be without a car. A pursuit made even more difficult because the would be Romeo lives in a relatively isolated section of a large military base. This friend, the fiend, understood his buddy’s plight and decided to take advantage of him. In the fiends defense he is young, stupid, and has trouble seeing the world beyond himself. Not a fault of his own. He hasn’t lived long enough or had enough experiences to broaden his view. But here, at this moment, this friend is a fiend. The car was borrowed for quite a bit of money and the promise of a full gas tank.
The boy in the drivers’ seat was ecstatic. Riding shotgun was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. In his eyes one would be hard pressed to find someone more beautiful. On second thought Rosario Dawson is extremely beautiful herself. The boy smiled at this thought. The beautiful Butterfly next to him squeezed his hand and asked
        “What are you thinking?”
The boy could only smile wider and laugh. “Nothing”
“Liar!” Butterfly said in her sweet voice, her slight Columbian accent only barely noticeable. The boy loved her voice. Senorita. I can’t forget your eyes, your hair, your Spanish ass. I don’t care, what you tell the other guys. Just hear me out I’ll do what you say just... He smiled again as the familiar song played through his head.
         “And what’s so funny now?”
         “Nothing, love”
“Liar!” Her accent was more pronounced now, and the boy couldn’t help but notice and adore it. “If I had super powers one of them would to be able to read minds”
“Why? Why not something useful like super speed or strength?”
“Because then I would always know what people are thinking. It’s useful to me.”
The boy smiled and continued to drive. He kept his eyes on the road, or at least if he was a good driver then he would have. As it was, the boy couldn’t take his eyes off of the woman next to him. Even the boy would have to admit that he was blinded by her beauty. After all, he let himself get blackmailed by the fiend. After all, he ignored all the warnings from work. Yes, this is a workplace romance. Word got out about the boy and his Butterfly before they were even sure what they were. Immediately the boy was pulled aside and warned that his Butterfly wasn’t perfect. In fact she was a whore. To listen to all of his “concerned” co-workers that was the impression that he got. He was told to stay away from her. It’s like throwing a hot dog down a hallway, bro He was told that she is bad news. How does it feel to be up in something that five guys were just in? He was told that she slept with anyone who showed a mild interest. I don’t even care that you stuck it in that nasty heifer just please, please, please tell me you used a condom He was told that she has been around the workplace, both here and at her old unit. Dude, you didn’t just lose your virginity to her, you lost it to everyone that works here The boy was told that she may have herpes; she certainly slept with a few people who did. Apparently she had bad habits and drunk too much, and was irresponsible, and was known for sleeping with many men. The boy was congratulated on ‘bagging’ someone in a higher position than him, then told to stay far away from this woman.
The boy listened and humored all those who pulled him aside. The boy’s first thought was that this is all slander. He worked with these people day in and day out, and was privy to all the things they said to and about each other. Not to mention that these were all men who didn’t really respect women in the first place. As much as the boy wanted to shrug off what he was told, something kept pulling at him. The first thing was the fact that he often saw something approaching genuine concern in the eyes of those who pulled him aside. Considering that these were some of the same people who put him through the whole pocket holding ordeal, seeing something like concern in their eyes made him pause. The second thing was the fact that there were so many people saying the same exact thing about this one person. Now that doesn’t make it true. If you moved to a new community and everyone there tells you that your neighbor is a registered sex offender; even without looking it up for yourself you know that you wouldn’t call them to baby-sit your kids. You can kind of follow the boys thought process on that one.
The boy is enamored. He ultimately dismisses everything that hears. He has not seen any behavior from her that even hinted at promiscuity. He chalks most of it up to lies, misunderstandings, hear-say, and ill-will, and cock blocking. Somewhere in all he heard there had to be some truth. Something that would dim the Butterfly’s glow. This went through the boy’s head, as did the fact that he was in a very similar situation in high school. The same things were said about that girl. He was pulled aside and warned then too. He ignored the warnings and wound up hurt. So much so that he thought he discovered perpetual motion in the form of his breaking heart. The boy was acutely aware of the similarities between now and the past. It had taken him a long time to get over her and he wasn’t eager to go through that kind of pain again. Despite everything, the Butterfly was still riding shotgun in the boy’s rental car. Like David Farragut said “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” By the way, yes, it was the fiends’ car but the boy paid so much for it that we’ll car it a rental car from now on.
The Butterfly was twenty six years old. Six years older than the boy. She had already been married and divorced. She almost got married a second time, but it ended before it made it to the altar. She had two kids 10 and 11, neither of which lived with her. The boy knew all these things, but he was blinded. Not just by her physical beauty but by her. She was very down to earth, and easy to get along with. She put the boy at ease whenever he was around her. She was funny, and had a great sense of humor; she would smile a lot and loved to laugh. She didn’t believe in making plans because, very early in her life, she was shown that things don’t always happen that way that you expect them to. However she did have a clear ideal of what she wanted in life and what she had to do to get to where she wanted to be. Despite the claims of her co-workers, she carried herself well and didn’t associate with many of the people she worked with. She is only human so she isn’t perfect, but she still radiates beauty even with flaws.
They unpacked the groceries, and the boy then set about making chicken parmesan. It had been awhile since he had been around a kitchen. He hit his stride within a few minutes and everything starts to feel familiar again. The boy calls his Mom every so often for quick tips on things that he forgot.
“Thank you! This is really good!”
“You’re welcome. Your knives suck by the way”
“No they don’t. Do they really?”
         “Yeah”
“Do you think I should get some new ones? What’s wrong with mine?”
“They work fine if all you ever wanted to cut was vegetables”
         “Haha shut up!”
They finished eating and cleared away all the dishes.
“Hey! You want to come watch True Blood in my room with me?” She asked. Her room had the newly bought fifty inch plasma TV in it.
         “Sure” the boy said.
“Don’t get any funny thoughts in your head. We’re just watching TV. No dirty stuff!”
“Haha whatever, I didn’t have a single dirty thought in my head”
         “Liar!”
         “Real talk”
“Ahahaha you sound weird when you try to act black”
“I am black” the boy said.
         “No you aren’t”
         “Yes I am”
         “Nope”
“I think I would know a little better than you”
         “Yeah whatever huero”
         “Cochina”
         “Quarter-inch killer”
         “Skank”
         “Skank-lover”
They laughed and went to her room. She put in disc three of season one and they made it midway through the first episode.
The boy and his Butterfly were not a couple. They are friends. ‘Just friends’ as she often pointed out. The met at work. Out of the blue the boy found himself in need of a mailing address. Not trusting his other co-workers, he asked her if he could use her address to have his college transcripts sent to him. They exchanged numbers so he could call and remind her to add him to her mailing list. One day did he call and they wound up talking. Over time the boys’ admiration for the Butterfly grew. That is a lie. Literally the first day he saw her, the boy carried a torch for her. How clichéd right? One night they had sex. It was the first time for the boy he was scared and nervous but it was wonderful. They have hung out, and ‘hung’ out since. Each encounter would embed the Butterfly deeper into the boys’ heart. From day one his Butterfly told him that she was only looking for a friendship. She had just been hurt and needed to heal. The boy said okay and that he understood. He wanted to show her that he could be a good friend. Someone that she could rely on no matter what. He didn’t want to take advantage of her, just show that she had someone in her corner. He was content with being a friend, his heart was not. Why they don’t work out? Because there is always one person in the relationship who is willing to 100% and another who is only willing to give like 30, no, 40%. Then things don’t work out and the person who gave 100% is left wishing that there was something that they can do. There isn’t but they still wish that there was. They start thinking that maybe if this happens then that other person will come back. They start wishing that things were different and they become miserable. No matter how much they hope or wish, no matter how deeply they care, things won’t change” She turned toward the boy and kissed him. “Thank you for being here”
I held her until she fell asleep fully aware that I was on the verge of discovering perpetual motion again.

Tuesday, October 20, 2009
I'm going on leave to see my Mom and friends Friday! I can't wait! I need a break from this base and there people. I had all my wisdom teeth pulled wednesday. The top ones came out without too much fuss. Apparently the bottom ones had to be broken into fifty seven pieces and then pulled out. It was fun times, that day. Healing fairly well just can't wait to eat normal food again. One gets tired of noodles. Just finished a new project. Looking forward to sharing it with you all. Right now I must get off my wonderful internet capable phone and back to work.

They took my teeth!

My mouth feels as though someone set of a claymore in it. Recently had all of my wisdom teeth pulled out. Actually the top ones were pulled out, apparently the bottom teeth had to be smashed into thirty-seven pieces then yanked out. The procedure itself wasn't too bad. The doctor gave me something to numb the area and despite the fact that I was sure that I was going to feel something, I didn't feel a single thing. Did feel him tugging and swinging about with his sledgehammer but no actual pain. After all the teeth were out, I immediately headed over to the pharmacy to pick up some Vicodin to take before the anesthetic wore off. With careful timing of when I take the pain meds I've been able to keep the pain at bay. However every now and then....

Getting closer to that magical date! Actually it isn't so magical. However I'll be going on leave next week and I'll be able to see family and friends. I'm looking forward to being able to do that. And when I get back from leave I'll turn 21 on the 14th! Excited about being able to celebrate my birthday in the states. Not that I'll be doing much celebrating. I want to have a fairly quiet birthday, not looking forward to getting drunk and partying. (Although my co-workers keep threatening to kidnap me and subject me to a night of drunken fun)

Other than that life is grand. Normal ups and downs and heartbreaks.

All Nereids Beware

The original 'plan' was for me to be assigned to the BAS and deploy when they head out. However no one knew if they would actually be deploying, or when, or where, or pretty much anything about what was going on. Not knowing what is going on is a common theme in the military. Now however the 'plan' for me has changed a tiny bit. After being with the BAS for a few months, I'm now with MP Company. Guess where we're going? I can't tell you. It's top secret and if I told you, I would have to have my eyelids removed. But I can tell you that we're going to Afghanistan.
My Mom wasn't very happy when I told her. Obviously she isn't going to be jumping up and down with excitement, but I still don't want her to worry. Even in college my Mom would get upset if I didn't call her every few hours and let her know that I was okay. So you can imagine how much she is going to worry when I'm away. So far the rest of the family and friends are handling it okay. Haha I'll be busy on pre-deployment leave though, I made quite a few promises to visit people. As for myself, I'm not sure how I feel. I guess a little nervous, anxious, and a lot calmer than I thought I would be. One day at a time.

In other news is it me or is the band Chiodos really good? That was a rhetorical question, we all know that Chiodos is awesome. Not as amazing as Incubus but they are pretty good. Love the energy of their songs and the singers voice, it's different but still pretty good. Also I was hanging out in the lounge at the BAS during lunch and there was this show on VH1 called "Real Chance of Love 2". Now we all know that reality tv isn't very imaginative, creative, interesting, or even all that real. However it seems that reality tv hasn't quite hit rock bottom yet. I thought that reality tv was bad enough as it is and that it couldn't get any worse. In it's quest to sink as low as it can go, reality tv is currently probing the depths of the Marianas Trench . Flavor Flav gets a show where a bunch of random people say "I saw you on tv/ at a concert/ in a magazine and now I love you!" From there one of the contestants gets her own show with the same premise "I saw you on tv and now I love you(and want to be famous)". From there two of her contestants not only get a show but a sequel as well.
Now maybe it isn't for me to judge these shows as being bad. It's true that they offer no real educational value and very little entertainment value. However maybe that's the point of all these reality shows. Maybe their sole purpose is just to offer some small iota of entertainment in these troubling times. Maybe I shouldn't be so quick to say that everyone involved with the creation and production of reality shows are stupid. Except it's hard to be fair when you turn on the tv to discover that VH1 had put camera's in an adult mental health home so that we could all laugh at it's occupants. That didn't actually happen, I'm referring to the 'Real/Chance' show but it's honestly hard to tell the difference.

Okay I'm not going to lie, I'm in love with Rosario Dawson.

If you're wondering, the title has nothing to do with anything. Just happens to be one of the songs I was listening to while writing this.

Thursday, September 17, 2009

Chiodos: "You won't be leaving my arms ever. A new week, fresh start, and another a chance to accomplish goals that you meant to but didn’t. I’m not in a positive mood. Today is Monday and I’d rather have Hepatitis than show up for work. Sadly the US Navy looks poorly upon those who aren’t at their appointed place at the appointed time. So against my will I ended up walking to the BAS. Nothing in my past history at the BAS would suggest that today would be anything other than torture. However, along the way I couldn't’t help but hope that the day would go by smoothly. I approached the smoke deck.
“Hey boot! Come over here and let me insult and demean you.” The person who made that statement had a horrible accent. It made him sound stupid. A lot of what he said made him sound stupid. The accent simply said ‘I dropped out of school’. Mr. Uneducated, his name from now on, repeated himself. “Hey boot! Come over here and let me insult and demean you.” I’m pretty sure that he didn’t actually say that either time. It’s more or less what he meant. I stopped walking and turned toward him.
    “Yes HM3.” I said.
“Hey come over and hold my pocket.” He turned his pants pockets inside out and looked at me with expectant eyes. I opened my mouth to say ‘no’ when suddenly he started to have a seizure. It wasn’t a seizure. His eyes grew wide as if he had just seen the Virgin Mary. His nostrils flared. His lips peeled back to unsheathe what could only loosely be described as a tooth. It was more like a tobacco stained tooth-like apparatus. It also looked as if it had been passed down through the family for generations. It was not a smooth tooth, it was scarred, serrated, chipped, and mis-happened. It had pockmarks and craters. It was many different shades of brown and yellow. There was a slight sour milk odor that emanated from this tooth like apparatus. The apparatus was an individual, it was not a follower like all the other teeth. While all the other teeth stood in line or in close proximity to one another, this tooth did it’s own thing. No sir, this tooth would not be sheep, it stood far apart and in front of all the other teeth.
Mr. Uneducated held his hands in tight little fist against his side. “I know a boot isn’t telling me no! Boot you’ve been in the Navy for what?! Nine minutes?!”
I’ve been in for almost two years.
“ I spent more time in Iraq than you have in the Navy”
Which isn’t true. I would’ve said something but I didn’t want to interrupt.
“When you seent the things I’ve done and done what I’ve done, that’s when you can say no. You don’t rate an opinion.”
At this moment another HM3 decided to come over and see what the commotion was about. However instead of listening in for a minute to get up to speed, or asking what the situation was, the new HM3 decided to launch into a speech that he had obviously rehearsed and waited quite a while to give.
“When a third class petty officer gives a you an order I know we follow it.” said the new HM3 on the scene. “Am I right?”
    “Yes HM3”
“Don’t talk back to me! When I want a response I will ask for one. Now HM3 Camper told you to grab his pocket. I don’t care if you don’t like it or if it seems silly. He is a third class and you are a boot so you don’t rate to think if you should do what he says or not. You just do it! You are an E1”
    I’m an E2.
“and he is a petty officer! He is always right. Even when he is wrong he is still right! Do I make myself clear? Because if you ever disrespect any of your superiors... We aren’t boots and we deserve respect. I am a third class petty officer. Give me, give us the respect we deserve.” He stopped his monologue and stared at me expectantly. I’m sure that there was some sort of response he was waiting for. I didn’t say anything because everything that came to mind somehow managed to contain the phrase ‘ I hope you get herpes’.
Luckily I didn’t have to think of anything to say at that moment because Mr Uneducated chimed in with “Hey boot come grab my pocket!” He was nothing if not persistent. I think it’s worth noting that through all of this he still looked as if he had seen the Virgin Mary. I looked around for help. Everyone was starting to line up for morning formation and pretty much ignoring me. The lower ranked Corpsmen were useless. The other thirds were useless. Most of them were jaded, hostile, or at the very best indifferent. The higher ups didn’t care about the affairs of us mortals. If I were to look toward one of them for help they would in turn look at me as if I were stupid. On the odd day when one of them was feeling charitable they would’ve told me to stop being a baby.
Mr Uneducated took some initiative and grabbed my wrist. Instantly I wanted to both stab him and remove his tooth-like apparatus. Although my thoughts tend have become increasingly violent lately, I’m not a violent person. So the stabbing option was out, even if I did have a knife on me. As for the apparatus, I didn’t have any pliers and I sure as hell wasn’t going to touch it with my bare skin, not even in the form of a fist. Mr. Uneducated pulled me closer so he could place my hand on his pocket, I couldn't’t help but notice that he was also pulling me closer to his tooth-like apparatus. I tried so very hard not to gag. He placed my hand on his pocket and actually gave a little satisfied grunt. At that very moment I couldn't’t help but hope that the next time he drove to or from work tired and sleepy, that he would fall asleep at the wheel and kill himself.
From there he couldn’t help but yell out to anyone who passed within a half mile of us
“Hey I got this boot holding my pocket!” He would then turn his body and point as if the other person couldn't’t make the connection themselves as to which pocket it is. I’m not sure what he saw in the glances of those he told. Maybe he saw admiration or respect, because every time someone looked at him, he beamed like a child getting a pat on the head from a proud father. To me everyone who bothered to acknowledge him looked bored and disinterested. With the exception of the new HM3 who looked like he couldn't’t have been more pleased with the situation. Eventually HM1 called the BAS to attention and started the morning formation. This brought about an end to my humiliation.
It was only 0730, my day was just beginning.

Thursday, August 06, 2009

It has been too long. Listen to the song “Alive with the Glory of Love” by the band Say Anything. Singer Max Bemis starts the song proclaiming his explicit desire for some girl. From sex on a foyer to the young lovers’ separation in work camps, by the end of the song he paints a harrowing love story against the backdrop of World War 2. If the listener was not aware that this song was set during the war, then the lyrics would have a different meaning to them, one would assume that the song is solely about sex. The song’s lyrics are only effective when they are in the context of the song. In order to understand something it must be taken in its’ proper context. Such is the case with the current debate against violence in media. People are not desensitized to the realities of violence by the movies they watch. They may however become more tolerant of violence and brutality in movies.

Many people argue that our culture is becoming increasingly obsessed with violence in the media. In her essay “The Postmorbid Condition”, Vivian C. Sobchack argues that “Today, most American films have more interest in the presence of violence than its meaning” (373). Not only has the level of violence increased, but there is apparently no reason behind it. There is an obvious increase of brutality in films, but there is no decrease of people’s reactions to it in real life. Violence in the media only serves to numb its viewers to media related violence.

The popular movie 300 is two hours worth of death and fighting. From its beginning a spear skewers a wolf. Men are kicked down an endless well. An entire village is massacred and strung up in a tree- this is all before the fighting starts in earnest. Once it does start, it is relentless. An arm is cut off. A Persians head is cut off. A Spartans head is cut off. A rhino gets a lance in the eye. A Persian gets a lance in the eye. Persian elephants are pushed off a cliff. Persians are pushed off a cliff. Sobchack would say that in a film like this “bodies are more carelessly squandered than carefully stylized”. She has a point; the movie only slows down to mention the death of a single Spartan soldier. There is no moral mention of the hundreds of Persian killed. It would seem that with a movie as violent and brutal as 300 the viewer would be aghast watching it. This is not the case. Not only did most people sit through the movie, they also cheered several times throughout. Adults have the ability to separate fact from fiction; while an adult is watching this movie, he or she can watch a man be killed and know that he is not dead in real life. Furthermore, with the advent of special features on DVD’s, most people are quite informed about stunts and how they are performed. Because this is made clear people are able to watch without being offended.

It is not just the violence that is said to have a negative effect; it is also the byproduct of violence, the de-humanization of the human body. This de-humanization is especially apparent in the film Final Destination. The premise of this movie is that a group of teenagers somehow manages to avoid their deaths in a plane crash. As a result death becomes somewhat personified and through a series of “accidents” comes after the teens one by one. Aside from the lead male and female characters, the audience is not actually expected to care about any of the other characters. The other characters in the movie merely represent an upcoming creative death. With a clothesline, one character is strangled; another has her throat cut, is impaled by a knife, then dies as her house explodes. Yet another character is infamously hit by a bus. Sobchack makes note of cases like these in which the deaths of the characters do not seem to have any kind of sorrowful effect on the audience. Rather Sobchack emphasizes that “the mounting gore and dead bodies [become] expected and funny”. The important point present here is context. While the movie is marketed as a horror film, overall the deaths in the film were designed to be inventive, and at the same time fun. If the movie is set up for the audience to have fun while watching it, then it is unfair to call the audience out for actually having fun while watching these types of films.

Repeatedly it has been said that brutality in media is having a desensitizing effect on its viewers. The opposite seems to be true with the television show Firefly and its movie Serenity. The basic premise of Firefly is that it is a character study of a captain and his crew. In the pilot episode, the captain is introduced as uncompromising. His will is put to the test when his ships mechanic, a young woman named Kaylee, is shot and finds herself in desperate need of a doctor. There happens to be a doctor on the ship at that moment, however he is a fugitive. He also refuses to help unless the captain helps him escape the law. The
captain must then decide whether he will give in to the doctor’s demands or let a member of his crew die. From the very beginning, the characters of the show are shown to be vulnerable, and every threat made has the possibility of being carried out. In Firefly and Serenity the viewer is meant to care about the characters so therefore, whenever a character found themselves in danger, the audience is concerned. In 300 the audience is supposed to cheer for the Spartans, so they cheered. In Final Destination, the audience is supposed to feel anticipation for the characters deaths so they reacted accordingly.

People aren’t desensitized? Since when is it ok to view children in danger? Pan’s Labyrinth is considered very imaginative and a work of art. The main character a young girl named Ophelia creates a fantasy world in which to escape from her surroundings. She lives in a war torn Spain with her pregnant mother. Her father was killed and now she finds herself adjusting to her new stepfather. These are just a few of the trials this girl must go through. Before the movie is over, she will have caused and witnessed the violent deaths of two fantasy creatures. She will watch her stepfather sew his cheek, which was cut in half. She will have watched her mother bleed profusely due to a pregnancy complication. Later she will listen to her mom’s screams as she dies. Ophelia will get shot and bleed to death. In the upcoming movie Hounddog a young twelve year old, Dakota Fanning will be raped. Regardless of context, no movie should imperil children in that way. Has this culture become so numb to violence that we seek entertainment in the killing and rape of young girls? These are only movies and as such are not real. Some lines should not be crossed.

Sometimes in trying to capture a feeling, movies do so perfectly. Other times in trying to create a mood or effect, they go too far. Such is the case with Pan’s Labyrinth or Hounddog. In real life, people have all the appropriate sensibilities about violence. Crimes against children still strike a nerve. People become alarmed about murder rates in cities. While violence in media is on the rise, people’s reaction to it in real life remains appropriate and proportional. Violence in media will not desensitize someone. Violence in media will not make someone more apt to stand by while another person is assaulted. Violence in media will not make someone able to watch news stories with disinterest. Violence in media will not make anyone do anything. Ultimately, it is up to you, the viewer, to make yourself.
